WHO declares Mpox a global public health emergency

Geneva August 15, 2024(QJ)-The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a high-level emergency following a rapid outbreak of monkeypox in several African countries.

The WHO reported that this disease, which originated in Congo, has now spread to most neighboring countries and nearby regions, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Monkeypox, also known as Mpox, has reached 16 African countries, and since August 4th, there have been 38,465 reported cases and 517 deaths across the continent since January.

The disease is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, as well as through respiratory droplets. Symptoms include small lesions on the skin, mouth ulcers, and sores in the genital area.
