US Demands Gaza ceasefire

WASHINGTON (SD) -Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris on Sunday issued a strong call for significant humanitarian aid to be delivered to Gaza, saying that people in the region are “starving” amid “inhumane” conditions while urging Israel to ease restrictions and allow much-needed supplies in, marking the strongest criticism yet from a senior American official regarding the ongoing crisis.

The remarks made on Sunday demonstrate a growing impatience with the Israeli government to address the situation in Gaza. “The Israeli government needs to do more to facilitate the delivery of assistance and essential services,” said Kamala Harris.

The statement also comes amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Hamas. On Monday, the US Vice President is expected to meet with Benny Gantz, a key member of the Israeli War Cabinet and the Defense Minister, and a political rival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Harris also reiterated President Joe Biden’s calls for a six-week cessation of hostilities and the increase of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

On Saturday, the United States and Jordan airlifted humanitarian assistance to Gaza after President Biden announced that the U.S. would provide substantial aid to the region.

Senior U.S. officials hailed the efforts as a success, but emphasized the need for more substantial measures to address the plight in Gaza, suggesting that land and sea access for substantial aid delivery to the region must be considered.
