Trump demands the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza
WASHINGTON (QJ) – The newly elected President Donald Trump is demanding the immediate release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza, warning that if they are not released before his second inauguration, there will be “HELL to pay.”
It is unclear if Trump is threatening to directly involve the U.S. military in Israel’s ongoing campaign against Hamas in Gaza. Trump’s allies have stated that he hopes for a ceasefire and an agreement for the release of the hostages before he returns to office early next year.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to comment. However, Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed Trump’s statement, which he posted on social media.
The Gaza conflict began when Hamas fighters infiltrated southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and capturing nearly 250 people on October 7, 2023. Approximately 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, with about two-thirds believed to be alive.
