Spain joins South Africa’s Genocide case against Israel

Barcelona June 06, 2024 (QJ)-Spain has announced that it will join the case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of violating its obligations under the genocide convention in its actions in the Gaza Strip.

Announcing the decision on Thursday, Spain’s Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, stated, “We have made this decision in light of the ongoing military operations in Gaza.”

South Africa filed its case against Israel in December, accusing it of committing genocide in Gaza. The death toll from Israel’s military campaign, which began in October, has surpassed 36,500, according to health officials in the besieged territory.

Countries that have joined or expressed their intention to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel include:

South Africa, Nicaragua, Belgium, Colombia, Turkey, Libya, Egypt, Maldives, Mexico, Ireland, Chile, Palestine, and Spain. Though Somalia expresses concern about the Gaza situation, it is not a party to the complaint.

Several other countries and organizations have welcomed South Africa’s case amidst an international effort to establish a ceasefire in Gaza.
