Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognized the state of Palestine

Barcelona May 28, 2024(QJ) -Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognized the state of Palestine today, a move that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a “historic decision.” This action has been criticized by Israel, which described it as a “reward” to Hamas after more than seven months of the devastating conflict in Gaza.

The three European countries believe their initiative will have significant international influence, likely encouraging others to follow suit.

They also highlighted the historical role of Norway and Spain in advancing peace efforts between Israel and Palestine.

The decision by Madrid, Dublin, and Oslo has provoked an angry response from Israel.

Among the 27 European Union members, Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria have already recognized the Palestinian state. Malta, like Slovenia, has indicated it may do the same.

Britain and Australia have stated they are considering recognition, while France has suggested that the time is right for such a move. Germany, however, has joined Israel’s ally, the United States, in rejecting unilateral recognition, insisting that a two-state solution should be achieved through negotiations.
