Somaliland President Finally Visits Flood-Affected Areas in Sahil Region
Berbera, 16 Nov 2013 (SDN) -Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo today made his first visit to areas in Sahil region ravaged by the flood disaster brought by a tropical cyclone earlier this week.
President visited the 400 families displaced by the floods who are currently temporary sheltered at Bursade primary school in Berbera, Sahil region.
President Silanyo during his visit to Burasde School which has turned to an internal displaced camp was briefed on the situation of the citizens affected by the torrential rains caused by the storm with whole villages being were swept away in Sahil region.
“There is a particularly urgent need for temporary shelter to protect the many displaced and vulnerable people from the elements and he also ordered all governmental agencies and regional administration to provide any assistance they can to the hundreds of people affected by this devastating cyclone.” President Silanyo said.
President Silanyo also lauded efforts by the Berbera regional administration for the urgent response in providing emergency transport to many people hence saving thousands of lives from the torrential flooding caused by the storm.
The Ministry of Resettlement and the Ministry of interior are spear heading humanitarian operation in Sahil with the head of the humanitarian office at the Resettlement ministry Ms. Amina Mahmoud Diriye and the Chairperson of the Somaliland Human Rights Commission Farhiya Haji Hussein distributing more than 1700 bags of assort food stuffs including 700 blankets and mattresses to displaced families currently sheltered at the Bursade School in Berbera ,Sahil region.
