Somaliland government reiterates ban on UN flights
Hargeisa, June 01 2013 (SDN) -Somaliland’s minister of aviation Mohamoud Hashi Abdi has reiterated Somaliland government’s decision to ban all UN flights from its airports following a spat with the Mogadishu-based federal government of Somalia. Speaking at Egal international airport, minister Mohamoud said that Somaliland government sticks to its decision to ban all UN flights from Somaliland airports. Last month Somaliland government issued the ban against UN agencies alleging that UNDP and the Nairobi-based Civil Aviation Caretaker Authority of Somalia (CACAS) had violated a previous agreement between Somalia, UNDP and the Somaliland administration. The minister also spoke about Hargeisa’s Egal international airports runway rehabilitation project funded by the Kuwaiti government. “The year-long resurfacing of the main runway of Egal International Airport is well under way and has entered its final phase. Now the Airport is undergoing a final phase rehabilitation that involves putting on asphalt top layer of seven centimeter” Minister mohamoud said while speaking about the progress of Egal international airport rehabilitation project. The rehabilitation project of Hargeisa’s Egal international airport has been since the second half of last year.
