Somalia: Puntland Ministry of Interior Warns Residents against Cyclone

Garowe, 10 Nov, 2013 (SDN) -Puntland’s Ministry of Interior has warned coastal communities along the Indian Ocean against a tropical cyclone that will last for two days, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking on Puntland-based independent station, Radio Garowe Deputy Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh said “International meteorological agencies informed the government that cyclones with life-threatening flooding are expected to hit northeastern coastal areas”.

“We tightened the surveillance system by addressing the public particularly local fishermen and regional administrations through the media and text messages,” added Hosh.

He emphasized the need for precautionary measures to counter the adverse effects of the cyclone.

Meteorologists also say, Winds of approximately 30-60 mph will impact eastern portions of Somalia beginning Saturday night and lasting through Sunday night.

Landfall of Tropical Cyclone is expected Sunday afternoon or evening and the strongest winds are likely to occur along the eastern shores of Somalia.

Cyclone struck Somalia in December 2012, damaging buildings and fishing equipment.
