Somalia granted vote at UN despite owing arrears
NY January 21, 2023 (QJ) – Somalia has once again been granted the right to vote in the General Assembly of the United Nations, even though Somalia has not yet paid off the arrears to the General Assembly of the United Nations for the past two years.
UN member states pay annual contributions or dues, and there are currently four countries, including Somalia, that have been exempted from paying arrears and been granted the right to vote, while other countries have had their voting rights suspended.
A statement from the office of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, said there are several countries that have failed to pay the contributions to the budget that supports the work of the UN, and emphasized that if they pay what they owe, they will be granted the right to vote.
