Somalia: Fire ravages Bakara Market
Mogadishu January 22, 2023 (QJ) – A powerful fire broke out in several parts of the Bakaraha Market in the city of Mogadishu, particularly in the areas where gold, silver, copper, and spices are sold, causing significant damage to property.
The fire, which lasted for several hours, was brought under control around 1:30am, with the help of the Banadir Regional Administration and private firefighting companies.
Some of the affected business owners who spoke to the media said that the strong fire destroyed many shops and resulted in the loss of a large amount of property belonging to Somali merchants.
The General Police Commander of the Banadir region, Macalin Mahdi, was present at the scene of the fire in the gold section of the market and ordered increased security measures.
It is reported that the fire began due to an electrical problem in a restaurant. This is not the first time that such a fire has occurred in the Bakaaraha Market causing damage to property.
