Somalia: FIFA Training Course Concludes in Somalia

Mogadishu,  Aug 21, 2013 (SDN) – The first training course sponsored by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in Somalia in two decades concluded at Mogadishu’s Benadir stadium Monday (August 19th), FIFA announced.

Thirty-one football coaches from across Somalia attended the five-day programme, which ended with a festival that hosted 300 children. The coaches will now train Somali youth in the elements of the game.

“This course represented a major milestone for our football,” said Somali Football Federation (SFF) Secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab. “It was a great platform for a new generation of Somali people, and a big step towards the normalisation of football in our country. The security situation in Somalia is getting better, and we believe that it is possible to move things forward.”

FIFA has also agreed re-build the artificial turf at Benadir stadium in time for the opening of the Somali Football League season on September 5th. The SFF aspires to send a team to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Arab said.
