Somali nationals arrested for ‘khat’

JOHANNESBURG – Two Somalian nationals were arrested in Johannesburg on Monday for being in possession of the drug Mirra, which originates from Ethiopia, Johannesburg metro police said on Monday.

They were arrested at 8am in High Street, Brixton after the leaves were found wrapped in plastic bags in the boot of their VW Jetta, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

A street value of R100,000 was put on the haul.

Minnaar said Mirra is classified as a drug in South Africa.

The two, aged 30 and 32 will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court this week.

It is also known as “khat”.
