Sheikh Sharif opposes constitutional amendment process

Mogadishu March 21, 2024 (QJ) -Former President of Somalia, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who is also a Member of Parliament in the Somali Federal Parliament, recently held a press conference in Mogadishu where he discussed various issues related to the political situation in the country and the ongoing constitutional amendments.

Former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed initially addressed the system under which President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is attempting to amend the constitution and the reasons for his opposition to it. He stated that he supports a constitution that has already been written and agreed upon, and that he does not accept any unilateral changes.

Additionally, former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed raised concerns about the transparency of the meetings between the two chambers of Parliament regarding constitutional amendments and their progress, indicating that they have not been concluded. He emphasized that the Somali government is currently focusing on tribal issues that could lead to division among the people.

Finally, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed stated that if the Constitution is not approved through consensus, it will not be accepted by the Somali people and could lead to further divisions.
