Rebuilding Continues in Somaliland
Hargeisa (SDN)-The Road Construction Commission of Somaliland recently transferred $50,000 to the Tog-Wajaale community to aid in the contruction of local roads in that region on behalf of the Somaliland government. The local community has organized and fundraised to rebuild roads much like other communities in Somaliland who have or are in the process of rebuilding their own infrastructure.
Telesom Somaliland’s leading telecommunications company also donated $25,000 to the project. The community is need of more funds but remains committed to finishing the project. The government’s contribution does not satisfy the total cost of the project and comes after several Ministries took note of the grassroots movement and were reminded by citizens that they have fended for themselves despite the expectation that their taxes should help pay for local development projects.
This type of initiative is not new in Somaliland which has had a functioning democracy for over two decades. Despite top-down government successes in democratic governance much of the rebuilding and development work that has taken place is due to concerted efforts by local citizens, Diaspora support and international non-government sources.
