Puntland president asks if Garowe should remain the capital
Garowe June 14, 2023 (QJ) -Puntland President, Said Abdullahi Deni, reportedly met with a group of elders and intellectuals from Nugaal region, telling them that his government is committed to facilitating the electoral process for the local councils of Garowe, Godobjiran, and Dangoroyo.
The President said it is necessary for the people of Nugaal to resolve their internal conflicts before conducting the elections.
According to sources during the meeting, President Deni posed a question regarding the legitimacy of the capital of Garowe, should it not participate in the parliamentary one-person-one-vote elections.
Deni also mentioned the possibility of expanding the number of political parties to five.
The meeting between Deni and some of Nugal’s intellectuals did not include a committee appointed by Islam Isa Islam Mohamed, they were tasked to resolve the political conflict – and they are expected to release information about their efforts tomorrow.
The Puntland Parliament’s session will start on Thursday, and it is expected to focus on the ongoing political dispute within Nugaal region.
