President Silanyo Meets EU Envoy to Somaliland and Somalia

Hargeisa, May 21, 2013 (SDN) – Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo has today cordially received the European Union’s Special Representative to Somaliland and Somalia Ambassador Michele Cervone in presidential palace Hargeisa. President Silanyo and the EU ambassador discussed issues of mutual interest between Somaliland and EU member states. After the meeting, Somaliland’s foreign minister, Dr. Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, and Ambassador Cervone held a joint press conference at presidency. In general, we discussed continuing cooperation between Somaliland and the EU, and in particular about the ‘New Deal’ initiative that the EU will be using to assist countries in Africa and other parts of the world, for security, political, and economic development purposes,” said Minister Omar. Continuing, the foreign minister emphasized that the EU will be “working directly with Somaliland and basing EU assistance on Somaliland’s National Priorities Plan”. Speaking at the joint press conference, Ambassador Cervone said that the EU will continue to “provide assistance to Somaliland based on the Priorities Plan of Somaliland”.

As EU special envoy to Somaliland and Somalia, Ambassador Cervone regularly travels to Hargeisa and Mogadishu for discussions with leaders.
