Obama Passes a law banning Somali Charcoal trade

Washington(SDN)-US president Barack Obama follows suite a UN resolution passed last year and bans Somali Charcoal trade,the sales of which rises funds for extremist group in Somalia.

The Law is actually an amendment of an existing executive order.

“The charcoal ban applies significant pressure on Al-Shabaab, which derives much of its income from charcoal exports,The production of charcoal in Somalia has also had a devastating environmental impact that has exacerbated the country’s protracted humanitarian crisis,Al-Shabaab continues to pose a serious threat to peace, security, and stability of Somalia, including by denying humanitarian access to those in urgent need” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a written statement.

The new Law also targets intellectuals who are deemed to have empaneled Somali public fund,who use child soldiers or committing violence including gender based ones.
