Mortar attack kills civilians in Mogadishu
Mogadishu (SDN) Mortars were launched at civilians living in the Sooni-key section of the Hodan neighbourhood in Benadir region last night. The source of the mortar fire is unknown and led to multiple casualties and injuries among residents there.
Five members of the same family were killed after a mortar was thrown at their home; ten others were injured as a result of the attack. Several women who sustained injuries were taken to the Benadir maternity hospital this morning.
Transitional Federal Government forces and Al-Shabaab militants often engage in open warfare in the streets of Mogadishu putting civilians at risk. This latest mortar attack adds to the burden of collateral damage being borne by the public. No word yet from the TFG on what is being done to help the injured or prevent similar incidents in the future.
Mogadishu and surrounding suburbs including Hodan have been the site of on-going targeted attacks and military activity. The TFG and its allies have promised to bring peace to the unstable capital but have yet to completely rid the city of insurgency. Somalia is currently in the process of recovery from decades long civil war and is in the process of ratifying an AMISOM led constitution.
