Markell: Twin Cities left wondering, worried after its citizens join ISIS

The head of a messianic Jewish ministry says she is concerned that Somali immigrants in her own state have reportedly left their homes to join a jihadist army currently at war in Syria and Iraq.

“Some of them are bragging that they are going to apparently what’s being called the worst and most brutal terrorist outfit known to the world of terrorism,” reports Jan Markell, referring to ISIS, or the Islamic State Iraq and Syria.

The worrisome report came from Minneapolis Public Radio, which said the FBI confirmed the Syrians had joined ISIS and was investigating their recruitment.

ISIS has been fighting in Syria to overthrow dictator Bashar Assad and the same group has famously captured much of Iraq in recent weeks during a bloody push toward Baghdad.

Mass killings, public beheadings and rapes of Shiite Muslims have been reported by the Sunni-led ISIS, which is using social media to publicize its gruesome feats.

Markell is founder and director of Olive Tree Ministries, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and she says the report has caused a real concern in the Twin Cities.
