Kenya’s Army Arrests Somali Students in Northern Kenya

Mandheera (SDN) -Kenyan soldiers have reportedly arrested multiple Somali youth in the northern city of Mandheera.

Soldiers were dispatched to Mandheera yesterday to conduct a security sweep of the area. Many young people who were deemed a threat to Kenya’s national security were arrested along border areas with Somalia.

15 youth that live in the town of Balad-Haawo and attend school in Mandheera were arrested by Kenyan forces and put in the city’s jail.

“The army arrived in Mandheere yesterday and they searched cars, people, and homes. They took many young people away in their cars, I don’t know where they took them” said a woman who lives in the city of Mandheera.

These events are troubling since Kenya is a key partner of the transitional federal government and its war against Al-Shabaab. It appears that Kenya is fighting a war on two fronts, one on Al-Shabaab and one on Somalis within its own borders.
