ISIL leader killed in clashes with Diyala police
A special counter-terrorism police force has killed “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL) leader Abu Ayoub al-Somali, a Somali national, and his aide, Iraqi police in Diyala province said Tuesday (June 17th).
Acting on information provided by detainees, the force ambushed a car carrying al-Somali and his assistant — a Syrian national — on their way into al-Azeem, Diyala police chief Maj. Gen. Jameel al-Shammary told Al-Shorfa.
The force tried to arrest al-Somali but he fired on them, forcing them to defend themselves with force, he said.
The security forces also seized light weapons, hard currency and a laptop “containing important information” they found in the men’s possession, al-Shammary said.
