IOM requests 18.5 Million to combat Mpox

Mogadishu August 23, 2024(QJ)-The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has requested $18.5 million to control the spread of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) across Eastern, Horn of Africa, and Southern Africa.

The funds will be used to provide essential health services to vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities who are at high risk due to poor living conditions and limited access to healthcare.

This request follows the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of mpox as a global health emergency of concern on August 14, 2024.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is particularly affected, with over 15,000 suspected cases and 537 deaths reported.

The new strain of mpox spreading in the region has a mortality rate of 3-4% and is characterized by rapid transmission and mild symptoms, which complicates detection efforts.

Other confirmed cases have been reported in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda.

Somalia has not yet reported any cases of mpox but has implemented preventive measures in response.
