Foreign Minister Briefs Parliament on Foreign Policy
Hargeisa, June 16, 2013 (SDN) – UNSOM’s political role is to rebuild a federal Somalia and is against the sovereignty of Somaliland, its constitution and peoples will, according to foreign minister Dr. Mohamed Abdilahi Omer. Briefing the country’s House of Representatives today on the work of his ministry and the recent visits that president Silanyo paid to UAE, UK, USA Ethiopia and Turkey foreign minister said that it was the government’s new approach in foreign policy and quest for international recognition. The foreign minister also pointed out that president Silanyo’s visit to USA in April this year was successful as president Silanyo conducted high level briefings and discussions with assorted institutions of repute in the US where tangible arrangements ensued. The country’s top diplomat also the informed the members of the House of Representatives that UNSOM current mandate has nothing to do with Somaliland because UNSOM’s political role is to rebuild a federal Somalia through a comprehensive and integrated international support.
Similarly the foreign minister also informed the members of the house that the government’s recent ban on UN fligths is still working “ we have informed Nicholas Kay that our ban on UN flights is still in place with the exception of development goods and items” foreign minister said.
Though the country is yet to attain the said long sought and elusive sovereignty recognition tremendous achievements have been made in the international arena where Somaliland has been invited and participated in various conferences as an equal with other countries whose flag fly at UN headquarters.
With the discernible shift towards a concerted and systematic quest for international recognition coupled with the stoicism of citizens whose ambitions for self-determination has been met with blindness to achievements and deafness to pleas for two decades, something or somebody has to change either for the better or worse.
