Countries supporting the IDF warned by the UN
NY October 18, 2024(QJ) -Countries enabling Israel’s “illegal occupation” of Palestinian territories, despite warnings of potential war crimes and massacres in Gaza, should be considered “complicit,” United Nations experts say.
Navi Pillay, head of the independent international investigation committee for the UN, stated, “Israel’s international wrongful acts give rise to state responsibility, not only for Israel but for all states.”
The committee published a new legal position paper outlining specific actions required following a recent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which declared Israel’s occupation since 1967 as “illegal.”
The committee also examined the implications of last month’s General Assembly vote calling for the occupation to end within a year.
The three-person committee, established by the UN Human Rights Council in May 2021 to investigate alleged violations of international law by Israel in the Palestinian territories, first outlined Israel’s obligations.
The committee further called on Israel to “return the land, property, and natural resources to the Palestinians displaced since 1967.”
All Israeli settlements in the West Bank, inhabited since 1967 and housing up to 700,000 Israelis, including occupied East Jerusalem, are considered illegal under international law, regardless of whether they have Israeli planning permission.
The committee also insisted that all states must adhere to “obligations under the Genocide Convention” and follow interim measures ordered by the ICJ in a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
