cholera outbreak kills 10 Children in Puntland
Garowe March 19, 2024 (QJ) -The city of Garowe, the capital of Puntland regional administration, has been hit by a cholera outbreak, claiming the lives of more than 19 people, including many children, with over 300 others being admitted to hospitals.
The outbreak, which is a result of cholera contamination, has been declared an emergency in the second month of this year in Garowe.
According to health authorities, the disease is now spreading rapidly, with medical facilities overwhelmed by the influx of patients, especially children.
Efforts are underway to contain the spread of the disease, with healthcare workers working diligently to provide medical assistance to those affected, as well as implementing measures to prevent the spread of the cholera bacteria.
Dr. Mohamed Jamaac Xirsi, the health director of Nugal region, speaking to the local media, stated that isolation facilities have been established for patients affected by the disease, and efforts are ongoing to control its spread.
Cholera is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, often resulting in death if left untreated.
Areas lacking clean and safe water sources, such as the banks of rivers, pose the highest risk for the spread of the disease.
