Somaliland lifts flight ban on UN Aircrafts

Hargeisa, July 15, 2013 (SDN) —Somaliland government has lifted a ban on UN flights imposed in May this year, Somaliland’s minister of civil aviation Mr. Mohamoud Hashi Abdi announced today.

Aviation minister made this announcement during a press conference he held today in his office.

“The ban has been lifted after considering the Aviation agreement reached by Somaliland and Somalia during the second round of talks held in Turkey earlier this month” he said during the press conference

The aviation minister also announced that starting from today (15th July) all UN flights are able to land and take off in Somaliland airports.

On 14 May, the Somaliland government banned UN aircrafts from flying over, or landing in Somaliland after Somalia’s Federal government in Mogadishu announced that they are preparing to take over the control of Somalia airspace by the end of this year.

The lifting of the ban came after Somaliland and Somalia agreed during their second round of talks in Istanbul held Sunday to Tuesday (July 7th-9th) to establish a joint committee in Hargeisa to manage air traffic control and equitable revenue sharing.
