VIDEO:Somali lawmakers sign motion against premier

Although the motion against the premier hasn’t yet been formally presented for vote in the parliament, the debate has caused tension in the capital Mogadishu.

Somali lawmakers argue that Shirdon’s government has failed to live up to people’s expectations.

The MPs cite security as one of the key challenges that Shirdon’s administration has failed to tackle. In the past months deadly attacks in the capital Mogadishu claimed many lives. Such attacks have lately undermined the peace that was being experienced in the capital Mogadishu.

An attack in a courthouse claimed thirty five lives in April. A month later, a deadly car bomb targeting the national security minister killed twelve civilians in Mogadishu.

The issue of regional administrations has also been a major factor in the planned motion against the Prime Minister. Most recently, elders converged in Somalia’s third largest city of Kismayo for the formation of a new state later named as Jubbaland.

Two warlords are now claiming presidency of the new state of Jubbaland. The central government in Mogadishu is strongly opposed to the so called Jubbaland administration.

This has also angered a number of lawmakers who support the new southern Somalia state of Jubbaland.

Experts believe the current challenges facing the new administration as well as the motion against the Prime Minister will be a litmus test for the new federal government formed in September and led by a 55 year old Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In October 2012, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud named Abdi Farah Shirdon Saaid as the country’s prime minister. The 54-year-old businessman was named Prime Minister, making it the first major decision by a stable administration in Somalia in more than 20 years.
