Somaliland has thousands of reasons to leave the failed union. All Somalia’s catastrophic problems started from the union itself
History is primarily a story or an account of past events. History teaches us a lesson. It also teaches everything including the future, so the mistakes are not repeated again.
The idea of learning from the past is very useful one which enables us to have a clue about the future events.
Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.
If Somaliland looks back 30 years of the ill fated union with Somalia, there will not be a single benefit it gained with this ill fated union.
Does Somaliland regret their past mistakes which they reunited with Somalia?
Who has the courage to admit the responsibility of the failed union?
It is obvious, that Somalis and their tyrannical regime of Siad Barre were responsible for the failed union.
So, Somalis should stop that failed dream which has already been buried in the grave.
The recreation of another united republic of Somalia is just a dream and no longer exists.
Somaliland is a young nation: It broke away from Somalia in 1991 and that was a time of hope. What achievements did Somaliland achieve so far?
There are countless achievements which have already been witnessed by the International community. Somaliland was reborn when the tyrannical regime of Siad Barre collapsed.
Since then, the peace loving people of Somaliland established a country built on the principles of freedom and democracy. It has everything that a country should have, sounds pretty good doesn’t it? It doesn’t receive much aid but, that doesn’t make it sense.
The hope of the union was to bring the five Somalis together and establish a free and democratic nation based on justice and equality but, this union led the people of Somaliland into massive destruction and genocide.
Remember, when Siad barre took power from the civilian government in 1969, he immediately declared the Majority of Northern Somalis enemies of the state.
How come Somalis are unable to admit their mistakes in the past and come to conclusion to stop this failed dream of creating another united republic of Somalia?
It is difficult to solve problem without finding out the root cause. Did Somalis ask themselves what were the root causes of the failed union?
Somaliland had been away from the rest of Somalia for the last 21 Years.
In this period, there is a generation gap: The young Somaliland generation who were born from 1991, have no knowledge about a united republic of Somalia so, it is like getting blood out of stone that the two nations can easily reunite again.
This is a significant point which needs to be understood by both neighbouring nations.
The people of Somaliland are happy to be where they are today, and they have thousands of reasons to leave the failed union.
Neither Somali president nor Somali people are able to tell the people of Somaliland a single benefit or reason to remain the union.
They always claim that unity is must but, not able to tell a single reason to remain the union.
The union had already failed, and the union itself caused great losses and setbacks to the people of Somaliland.
It also brought enormous injustice and sufferings to the people of Somaliland.
The dream of Somaliwein is over, failed and cannot be brought back ever.
No more union, those days are gone, long gone. We are deeply concerned for those that still believe a reunion of the two countries.
This is the self-determination of the people of Somaliland and cannot be changed at all.
All peoples have the right to self-determination by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.
The right to self-determination of peoples is recognised by the International law.
Somaliland had gone through hard times. It had successfully succeeded to solve to its past problems through process of reconciliation and restoration of confidence in the region.
It avoided more bloodshed. It has a big cultural tradition where the people of Somaliland have been living peacefully side by side for ages.
The historical wisdom of the people and the historical memory of the people of Somaliland just helped effectively for those hardship times it had in the past.
The key question is. Does Somaliland have a right to withdraw from the failed union?
Of course yes, Somaliland just united with Somalia without a written agreement and voluntarily, if it doesn’t meet its wants and ambitions then, it has right to withdraw again from the failed union. Somalia needs to understand one thing which is very important for both countries:
Despite our individual likes and dislikes, we all belong to the sect of humanity, and the importance is that we were two nations which united before voluntarily, but the hope of the union didn’t work out but became ill fated union.
Somaliland wants to have a very good relationship with Somalia and on top of this: it wants to help with their brothers in Somalia with their traditional knowledge.
We want you to have peace, stability, harmony in your country which had been suffering for long time.
It is our interest to live together in peace, because we are very close neighbours.
This could be the right time that Somali leaders must stop the lip entertainment services which kept them back for ages and realise that Somaliland is the point of no return.
We cannot make the impossible possible anymore. The lip entertainment service is over.
Talks between the Republic of Somaliland and Somalia
Turkish government offered to mediate talks between Somaliland and Somalia and invited both sides for the continuation of the negotiations that begun during June 2012 in London and Dubai.
The two countries have had no direct contact since 1991.
This is the third stage of the talks between the two neighbouring countries and both sides will send delegations to turkey to determine the nature of the talks and agenda.
Talks are expected to take place within two weeks time.
What does Somaliland expect from these talks which are expected to take place in Ankara?
Well, Somaliland wants to be a separate country and have no intention to reunite to Somalia again and waits to International recognition from the International community.
Somalia wants Somaliland to be part of a single Somali state which is impossible and will not be possible anymore.
Finally, Somalia needs to forget about another ill fated union with Somaliland.
Somaliland will never forget the genocides, oppression, imprisonments, massive displacements, torture and the destruction of the cities.
No more union, those days are gone, long gone, we are deeply concerned for those that still believe a reunion of the two nations.
