Somali Diaspora Model Makes Her Way To The Motherland
Mogadishu (SDN) -Renowned Somali model Samira Hashi returned home to Somalia after 18 years abroad. She left Somalia at the age of three soon after the start of the civil war.
“The only things I knew about Somalia were what I saw on TV, the droughts, famine, pirates and conflict” said Samira.
Growing up she always felt that there was something missing, she often asked herself how her life would have turned out if her mother had not fled to London with her.
Samira took the opportunity to tour the refugee camps in Dhadaab Kenya and Doolo Cado in Ethiopia. She also went to Mogadishu where she was provided ample security. While there she met young women her own age who expressed their fear of rape and losing their children to the violence.
Samira also had the chance to visit Somaliland’s capital city of Hargeisa where she described the region as peaceful and also addressed the tradition of female circumcision that is still widely practiced.
“My trip to Somalia was heartwarming, I fulfilled my goal of visiting my motherland and I leave with a newfound perspective on the way the situation is there” she said.
Samira’s trip is part of a program that will soon air on the BBC.
