Heightened Security around Mogadishu’s Airport
Mogadishu (SDN) -Mogadishu’s main road to the airport was shut down early Tuesday morning (May 1st) soldiers and police officers were seen conducting security activities in the area throughout the early hours.
Soldiers were seen patrolling the city’s roads and randomly searching civilian vehicles. Several roads were closed to the public causing traffic jams, hindering the movement of taxis, buses, business people and students on their way to work and school.
The reasons behind the massive road closures remain unclear however they were opened several hours later for public use. This type of security activity in the area surrounding the airport is not uncommon and may indicate the arrival of transitional federal government officials in the city or foreign dignitaries. Whatever the reason, the heightened security will likely continue.
