Somaliland’s NDB and Republican Parties Leaders Arrested

Hargeisa(SDN)-Police in the capital city of the break-away enclave of Somaliland north of Somalia have arrested several prominent political leaders after the government received information that they were organizing demonstrations.

Fosia Yusuf Hajji Aden of the NDB and Ahmed Sandon Hassan of the Republican party failed to qualify to officially take part in election run-offs.

The two leaders were arrested early in the morning without a warrant according to supporters of the two at their respective headquarters.

The NDB and Republicans in Somaliland are not the only parties that oppose the recent decision of an elections committee that also determined that nine other parties could not fulfill the electoral requirements to move on to the runoff stage.

Somaliland which united with Somalia after independence from colonial rule in 1960 to form the Republic of Somalia declared unilateral secession in 1991 after a bitter civil War.

The international community has yet to recognize Somaliland despite making remarkable headway in democracy, peace building and rebuilding institutions.
