Doha August 14, 2024(QJ) -Mediators involved in ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel are making a final push to revive stalled talks as tensions in the Middle East escalate, with concerns over a potential Iranian attack on Israel.

A high-stakes meeting scheduled for Thursday will see Qatar, Egypt, and the United States present a plan to implement a contested ceasefire agreement. This proposal was initially put forward by U.S. President Joe Biden in May, but unresolved differences have hindered progress.

Israel is expected to send a delegation to the talks, which will include CIA Director Bill Burns, Mossad Chief David Barnea, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, and Egypt’s Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel, according to diplomatic sources close to the negotiations.

However, Hamas has indicated that it will not participate in Thursday’s talks. Instead, it has stated that it is willing to engage with the mediators afterward if there are “significant developments or concrete responses from Israel,” according to a source.

The urgency of the negotiations was underscored by a joint statement issued last week by the three mediators, a rare occurrence, in which they called on the warring parties to return to the negotiating table. They also presented what they described as the “final bridging proposal” to overcome the remaining points of contention. The details of this proposal have not been officially disclosed.
