Hamas open to discuss new ceasefire proposal

Gaza June 29, 2024 (QJ)-Osama Hamdan, a senior official of Hamas based in Lebanon, has stated that the Palestinian group is still willing to discuss any initiative for a ceasefire to end the nearly nine-month-long conflict.

Arab mediators, supported by the United States, have failed to achieve a ceasefire, with both sides blaming each other for the deadlock. Hamas has stated that any agreement must end the conflict favorably and include a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Israel, on the other hand, has said it will only accept a temporary halt to the fighting until Hamas, which has governed Gaza since 2007, is “eradicated.”

Hamdan mentioned that the group has not yet received a new ceasefire proposal from the mediators.

This news comes as the U.S. proposed a new language to bridge the gap in ceasefire talks and the hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas, as stated by a senior U.S. official on Friday.
