Ireland, Spain, and Norway will recognize the State of Palestine

Ireland (QJ) -The governments of Ireland, Spain, and Norway have announced today that they will recognize the State of Palestine starting May 28th, hoping other Western countries will follow suit. This decision prompted Israel to summon its ambassadors.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that this move aims to accelerate efforts to secure a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Spain and its allies have been campaigning for several months among European countries, including France, Portugal, Belgium, and Slovenia, to garner support for recognizing Palestine.

Approximately 144 out of the 193 member states of the United Nations have already recognized Palestine, including most countries in the Global South, as well as Russia, China, and India.

However, only a small number of the 27 members of the European Union have taken this step so far. Sweden was the first to do so in 2014. The UK and Australia have indicated in recent months that they might soon follow.

The United States, a close ally of Israel, last month vetoed a United Nations attempt to recognize the State of Palestine, arguing that a two-state solution can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties involved.
