UK concerned about Rafah offensive

London May 10, 2024 (QJ)-The UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, has once again reiterated the UK’s position that they will not support Israel’s large-scale operation in Rafah “if there is no clear plan to protect civilian lives.”

“We do not see a plan, and if there are prevailing circumstances, we will not support a major operation happening in Rafah,” Cameron said.

He emphasized the “fundamental difference” between the UK and the United States’ approach, where President Joe Biden has indicated that he will immediately cease any significant military aid to Israel if an attack on Rafah occurs.

As the Israeli airstrikes targeting Rafah continue, it has been reported that up to 80,000 people, according to the Palestinian Refugee Agency of the United Nations, are now displaced from the area.

More than one million and a half Palestinians, including many children, are among those affected by the situation in Rafah.

Israeli military officials had previously informed residents to evacuate the area as they planned a ground offensive targeting Rafah.
