UN issues a Gaza ceasefire
NY March 25, 2024 (QJ) -The United Nations Security Council has issued a resolution urging for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, following the United States reversing its previous position
The resolution also calls for an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
The resolution, presented by the 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council, demands an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, with urgent humanitarian needs in GAZA to be addressed.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said failure to implement the resolution would be “unforgivable.”
The stance taken by the United States indicates an increasing divergence between the US and Israel regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The United Nations Security Council vote on Monday comes amid heightened tensions resulting from upcoming Israeli military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
