SOMALIA: SNA launches operations against Al Shabab

Baidoa January 21, 2024 (QJ) -Somalia’s National Army has today carried out a planned operation against Al Shabab on the outskirts of Baidoa, the capital of Bay region.

The military operation was carried out by the 8th Brigade’s 60th Division, which resulted in the liberation of several villages near Goofgaduud-burey.

The Commander of the 47th Brigade, Ahmed Mohamed Nur (Ahmed Dhagey), who led the operation, stated that the forces reached villages close to Goofgaduud-burey in the Bay region. Additionally, he mentioned that they encountered resistance from Al-Shabaab during the operation.

The Commander also reported that they captured key areas and destroyed Al-Shabaab bases. Furthermore, he disclosed that they destroyed offices where recruits were being enlisted to join the extremist group. The offices were also collecting illegal taxes from residents in the Bay and Bakol regions.

The military operation resulted in significant Al Shabab casualties, and efforts are ongoing to assess the extent of damage inflicted on the militant group’s bases.

There has been no official statement from Al-Shabaab regarding the military operations, and the situation is still unfolding.
