President Hassan proposes two-party system and eliminates PM’s position
Mogadishu October 14, 2023 (QJ) -President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia delivered a speech on Friday, addressing various aspects of federal and regional elections and a proposed change to the prime minister’s role to a vice-president, which is expected to occur in 2026.
The President emphasized the need for an improved system, explaining the potential restructuring of the electoral model to a two-party system. He called for an inclusive approach, indicating that two major political parties should be established to replace the current parliamentary system in Somalia.
He rejected the notion that the agreement would extend the federal or regional leader’s term in office and underlined the importance of engaging all relevant stakeholders in the process.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also noted that Somalia must hold simultaneous elections to achieve lasting peace and avoid a divided or disputed leadership. He highlighted the significance of reaching a consensus for the greater good of the nation.
He called for a unified approach and emphasized that if the country does not find a solution to the current situation, it will be challenging for both incumbent and incoming governments to operate effectively.
The proposed changes are in front of the parliament and have not yet been successfully passed by the parliament. And has met with resistance. Also, President Hassan Sheikh met with politicians and former leaders but did not succeed in gaining widespread support for the proposal.
