Somalia to receive $10.5 million for drought relieve from Qatar, UK and USA
Mogadishu June 05, 2023 (QJ) – Somalia has received a $10.5 million donation for drought relief and resilience efforts from the Qatar Development Fund, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the British Embassy in Mogadishu.
This tripartite partnership aims to address the humanitarian crisis in Somalia and mitigate the impact of recurrent droughts that have affected the country in 2021 and 2022.
Up to 6.6 million people in Somalia are in need of immediate food assistance, making the situation critical for both agriculture and livestock.
“This is a crucial intervention, but humanitarian support alone cannot solve Somalia’s underlying challenges,” stated Mike Nithavrianakis, the British Ambassador to Somalia.
More than three million people have been affected by the humanitarian crisis in Somalia since January of the previous year.
Furthermore, over 500,000 vulnerable children, under the age of five, are at risk of acute malnutrition or may require life-saving nutrition support this year.
