Somalia: Rival clans clash in Mudug

Galkacyo June 04, 2023 (QJ) – The news coming from Mudug indicates that a fierce conflict erupted on Saturday in the outskirts of the Barwaaqo district of Mudug region, involving two rival clan militias.

The intense fighting took place between militias aligned with tribes in Puntland and Galmudug administrations, both of which claim jurisdiction over the area.

According to the reports, the fighting resulted in casualties as heavily armed militias attacked pastoralist communities residing in the vicinity of Barwaaqo.

At least 7 people were reported dead, and another 5 were injured on both sides, according to local sources.

Some local residents interviewed by the media provided insights into the events, describing the chaotic situation and the displacement caused by the clashes, as reported.

Furthermore, it was mentioned that the armed groups involved in the conflict had mobilized reinforcements from Puntland, according to the remarks made.

The situation remains tense and volatile, with ongoing reports of sporadic clashes in the area.

Mudug region has become a focal point of escalating tensions between the rival regions, leading to confrontations between clan militias.
