Somali parliament seeking term extension
Mogadishu March 03, 2023 (QJ) – The two chambers of the Federal Parliament of Somalia are planning to extend the term of the government, and a committee composed of members from both chambers has been established to work on the term extension process.
The parliamentary committee is tasked with finding a way to extend the term of the government from four to five years and has held several meetings, and they have selected a team of experts to help figure out how the government’s term extension can be legally and constitutionally done.
The parliamentary committee is given seven days to propose a draft proposal. The term extension plan proposed by the committee was supported by pro-government lawmakers, including those loyal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who viewed it as a necessary step to stabilize the country, but other MPs are said to be vehemently opposed to the plan.
