NUSOJ in Partnership with Relief International Conduct Media Awareness Campaign in Mogadishu
Mogadishu November 13, 2014-The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) in partnership with Relief International organized Media Awareness Campaign program, held for 40 participants drawn from the Media, civil society, local universities, at Mogadishu’s Siyaad City Hotel on Thursday November 13, 2014.
The one day event, which was supported by the European Union, was entitled “Connecting between people and Media” and was aimed at highlighting the importance of the media to the public and its benefits and contributions to a building a healthy and democratic society, the public perception and exploring the future of the Somali media.
Mr. Abdiasis Diiriye, a representative from Relief International who stressed the importance of such forums both to the media and to the public and pledged that his organization is committed in supporting the Somali media.
The union’s Secretary General, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim elaborated the importance of this media campaign and how it can be of help for the public in understanding the vital roles played by the media and the public service provided by media can build peaceful and democratic society, while thanking Relief International and the European Union for facilitating this highly organized media campaign program happen.
“Such forums are very crucial in shaping the public opinion about the media and understand its importance” Mohamed Ibrahim, NUSO Secretary General said, “Such connections can build a strong and vibrant media that could win the with public trust.”
“We will continue to hold such discussions as they could help transform the public into more peaceful and vigorous society.” Mr. Ibrahim added.
The discussion which was highly participatory and interactive started with panel discussion, followed by Questions and Answers and group discussion.
On September 17, 2014, NUSOJ and Relief International held consultation meeting on the Somali Media development. The Consultation meeting was aimed at receiving recommendations/priorities from NUSOJ on empowering Somali Journalists with professional skills and techniques that allow them in producing objective, credible and quality reporting in Somalia. In addition to that, it was also designed to discuss gaps for Somali media workers on covering peace, good governance, human rights and democratization.
NUSOJ
