Prime Minister: “A free press is at the heart of every democracy”
His Excellency Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, speaking on World Press Freedom Day, said:
“On World Press Freedom day I want to reiterate my government’s steadfast commitment to a free press and freedom of speech. A free press is at the heart of every democracy and is guaranteed under the constitution.
“Journalists perform a critical function in society and it is important to recognise on this day their contribution to democracy and development. We want them to be able to work without fear or favour as they carry out their key role in the continued rebuilding of our nation and institutions.
“The government pays tribute to the brave journalists who have sadly lost their lives or been injured protecting freedom of speech in Somalia. This government will continue its work to create an environment where journalists feel safe, respected and can operate impartially.”
