Somaliland: Former Deputy Governor of Togdher Region Arrested

Buroa, 3 Jan 2014 (SDN) –Former Deputy Governor of Togdheer region Mr. Guleid Dahir Samatar was arrested by the Rapid Reinforcement Unit of the police force in a special operation carried out late Thursday night in Burao. According to our Eastern regions correspondent Mr. Samatar was

immediately taken to Barbara where he is being held. Ifrah Diriye Awad-wife of the arrested Former Deputy Governor of Togdheer region speaking to the media said,” We were asleep and were terrified when the RRU forcefully entered our house late at night and arrested my husband. Their behavior and the way they searched our house was inhuman. They could have arrested my husband-during the day- with or without a warrant.”

Earlier on Thursday, in a clash between demonstrators and RRU in Odweyne, 4 people were wounded, one of seriously according to the town’s hospital sources.

In 2013, RRU has successfully carried 5 operations in the city of Burao. All the operations were linked with individuals who had or were suspected connection with Al-Shabaab. Their first operation of 2014 in Burao is totally different from those of 2013.
