Somaliland: Fisheries Ministry Encourages Local Businesses to Invest Fishing Sector, Issues a Stern Warning to Illegal Fishing Vessels
Hargeisa, Aug 15, 2013 (SDN) —Somaliland’s ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has encouraged local businessmen to tap on opportunities in in fishing industry and issued a stern warning to illegal vessels poaching in the country’s waters. Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources conference hall, the Director General Mohamed Elmi Adam dubbed as “Ilkascase” has said that fishing sector’s economic potential is great and local businesses should utilize.
“We are encouraging local businesses to invest fishing industry because it has an economic potential and will generate revenue for the country, contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and it also contributes to food protein” Said the Director General.
The DG also described illegal fishing as one of the main challenges facing the fisheries sector in Somaliland. Speaking to reporters at his office today, he said due to rampant illegal fishing practices, coupled with other challenges such as weak surveillance, monitoring and control system, the sector has not been able to realize its full potential.
The Fisheries Ministry Director General also said that because they value this natural resources, they want to take care of it for the benefit for the people therefore they are putting in place measures to combat illegal fishing .
The DG also issued a stern warning to illegal vessels poaching in the country’s waters.
