Opposition Against New Constitution Grows
Gaalkayo (SDN) The Minister for Constitutional Affairs for the regional administration of Galmudug, Hasan Faarah Barre held a press conference in the city of Gaalka’yo today where he told journalists that his administration is opposed to some of the articles in the new constitution which is currently in the process of being ratified in Somalia.
He stated that after reviewing the document it became clear to him that it is not based on Islamic principles. He specifically pointed out articles 7, 22, and 34 as being contrary to Islamic values according to his argument.
Opposition against the constitution continues to grow from main stream politicians and members of the public. Not to be left out of the fray, the extremist group Al-Shabaab recently spoke out against the new constitution threatening to kill anyone who takes part in the ratification of the non-religious document. For others however, the issue goes beyond the content to address the methodology behind the TFG’s constitution. More specifically, the rapid pace of the constitution’s development has concerned some that feel the process has not been inclusive or thorough enough.
