5 killed in Somalia landmine blast
MOGADISHU – Five people were killed when a government convoy struck a landmine in southern Somalia’s Lower Juba region, eyewitnesses said.
Government forces sealed off the area following the blast.
Somali authorities have yet to comment on the incident, for which no group has claimed responsibility.
Somalia has suffered from on-again, off-again violence since the outbreak of civil war in 1991.
The country had appeared to inch closer to stability with the recent installation of a new government and the intervention of African Union troops tasked with combatting Somalia’s Al-Shabaab militant group.
