123 Somalis return from Sudan

April 30, 2023 (QJ) – The Federal Government of Somalia today brought back 123 Somali citizens who were stranded in Sudan due to the recent conflict in the country.

According to the Somali government, among those who returned were students who were studying in Sudan. 78 of the returnees arrived in the capital, Mogadishu, while the other 45 were received in the Puntland regional capital, Garowe.

The government facilitated their return and arranged for them to travel to Ethiopia, and were welcomed in Mogadishu by Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

This is the second batch of Somali citizens who have been repatriated from Sudan. Earlier, the Somali government facilitated the return of 30 Somalis who were stranded in South Sudan due to the conflict.

The Somali government has expressed its commitment to support Somali citizens who are stranded in Sudan due to the conflict in that country.

The government has been previously criticized for not working to facilitate their return and ensuring their safety.
