WFP targeted by Militia in Central Somalia

Gaalkayo (SDN) – Reports from Mudug region in central Somalia say trucks working for the World Food Programme (WFP) destined for the city of Gaalkaayo were diverted by militia. Witnesses told SDN that two heavily loaded trucks were stopped by an unknown armed militia and confiscated.

The Minister of Internal Affairs and Security for the regional administration of Galmudug Abshir Diini Awaale spoke to journalists and confirmed the hijacking of the WFP trucks; he also said police are currently tracking the whereabouts of the militia.

According to reports the Militia has stated it is securing the food aid and cites poor management by NGOs as the reason behind the seizure of the humanitarian convoy.

This is not the first time WFP operations have come under attack, four months ago two WFP workers were killed while on mission in Hiiraan.
