UPDATE: Wounded Somali lawmaker dies in hospital

MOGADISHU – A Somali lawmaker shot several times during an assassination attempt in the Somali capital early Saturday died in a hospital, officials said.

According to police, the lawmaker Mohamed Ahmed Gurhan was shot from a moving vehicle in Hamarweyne district on his way to work. the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabab group has claimed the responsibilit6y for the attack which highlights the challenges facing the country’s legislative body members.

Despite doctors’ efforts to save the wounded MP’s life, Somalia’s information minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir Confirmed the death of the legislator who becomes the sixth Somali legislator killed in Somalia this year.

Somalia’s parliament speaker Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari has condemned the attack against Mr. Gurhan, describing his death as a ‘painful’ loss.
